The impact of political mediation strategy on the success of political conflict / dispute resolution

Abstract

The article examines the impact of political mediation strategies on the effectiveness of resolving political conflicts and disputes in the contemporary context of societal crisis development. The relevance of the topic is обусловлена by the growing number of conflict situations in the sphere of public policy that require effective mechanisms for preventing escalation and achieving mutually acceptable solutions. Political mediation is considered as a specific instrument of political communication aimed at establishing dialogue between conflicting parties through the involvement of a neutral and impartial mediator. The study substantiates that the choice of a mediation strategy largely depends on the type of actors involved in the political conflict and the model of their behavior. Destructive, conformist, and constructive types of political conflict actors are identified, and the corresponding mediation strategies appropriate to each type are determined. It is established that in cases where the parties demonstrate constructive behavior, the most effective approach is a communication-facilitation strategy, in which the mediator primarily performs a facilitative role. In situations dominated by destructive behavioral patterns, the mediator applies directive mediation aimed at containing the escalation of the conflict. Conflicts involving conformist actors are characterized by procedural mediation, where the primary focus is placed on structuring the negotiation process. Particular attention is devoted to the specificity of positional conflicts, within which the parties seek to defend their own demands without taking into account the interests of the opposing side. It is demonstrated that the positional model of negotiations often leads either to the aggravation of the conflict situation or to its “freezing.” In this regard, the article argues that one of the key tasks of a political mediator is the transformation of a positional conflict into the framework of collaborative or principled negotiations oriented toward cooperation and the search for mutually beneficial solutions. The study emphasizes that the collaborative approach creates the necessary conditions for achieving long-term compromise, preserving political stability, and ensuring both procedural and psychological satisfaction for all participants in the negotiation process.
